Frequently Asked Questions

Washington Health System Laboratory Services does not require appointments for most routine testing.

There are a few tests, however, that can only be collected at the hospital sites because of special shipping and handling requirements. It is always best to check with our Laboratory if you have any questions at (724) 223-3120 (WHS Washington Hospital) or (724) 627-2608 (WHS Greene)

Washington Health System accepts most insurances, but you may want to check with your insurance carrier for specific details. Medicare and Medicare HMO patients may be asked to sign an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests not covered under Medicare.

Washington Health System Laboratory Services is a fully-accredited laboratory with more collection sites throughout the area than any other health system. There are nine conveniently located draw sites in Washington and Greene Counties.

Don’t wait until the day of your blood draw to ask if you should fast. That could cause your appointment to be rescheduled. If at any point you’re unsure if fasting is required, contact your doctor. Fasting requires that you consume no food or drinks (including coffee or tea) prior to having your testing. Drinking water is permitted and encouraged, along with any medications unless instructed otherwise by your physician. If you take vitamin or mineral supplements, ask your physician if you are permitted to take them prior to your blood or urine test.

How long should you fast prior to your test? It depends on the test. Fasting for a lab test typically lasts eight hours. Your doctor should give you any special instructions related to your tests, including fasting requirements. Always follow his or her instructions.
